FOR THE KIDS ~
Using Cyberspace

Cyberspace for Parents & Kids

Guidelines for Parents

1. Be involved, establish ground rules and provide supervision

Ground Rules

  • Establish when the computer may be used and when it can't.
  • Establish limits for the number of hours per day that the kids may be online.
  • Remind kids that when they are online no one else can make or receive calls.
  • Talk to your children about places they can go online, set up bookmarks or a homepage.
  • Encourage your children to participate in chat groups and discussions that are monitored.
  • Talk to your kids about what to do if something or someone online makes them uncomfortable or upset -- go "home", disconnect or tell a parent.

2. Have a ongoing dialogue with your children about what is offensive. Let them know when you feel uneasy about an online situation.

3. Teach your children about strangers. "If they wouldn't do it in real life, don't do it online."

4. Tell your children, regardless of who asks, to never give out their name, address or phone number (including E-mail address) without your permission.

5. Never give out your password to anybody online.

6. Make it clear that unless they have your permission, kids are not to send photos to others online.

7. Have your children agree that they will never arrange to meet someone.

8. Show your children how to connect/disconnect with your service provider.
